Private Van to Disneyland Paris vs RER —
What's Best for Families?

Updated January 2025 · 7 min read

This is the question every family asks when planning a trip to Disneyland Paris: do we take the RER to save money, or book a private van for convenience? The honest answer depends on your family. Let's break it down properly.

The real cost comparison

People often say "the RER is much cheaper" — but is it really, for a family?

RER tickets cost around €20 per adult and €10 per child (under 10 often free). For a family of 2 adults + 2 children: ~€50–60. Plus you need to buy Navigo day passes or individual tickets at the barrier.

A private van from CDG for the same family starts at €89 — for the whole vehicle, not per person. That's a difference of €30–40 for an entirely different experience.

When you add the hidden costs of the RER (missed trains, wrong zone tickets, the second taxi because the stroller didn't fit), the gap narrows considerably.

The stroller problem

If you have a stroller, the RER is genuinely difficult. Most Paris RER stations have stairs, narrow barriers, and packed carriages. You'll need to fold your stroller to get through ticket barriers at many stations. With a baby in arms, two suitcases and an excited 4-year-old, this becomes an ordeal.

A private van: the driver loads your stroller in the boot. You buckle the kids in. You sit down. Done.

Baby seats — the non-negotiable

French law requires children under 10 years old (or under 135cm) to be in an approved child restraint in any vehicle. The RER doesn't have seats. A standard taxi or Uber almost never has a baby seat available.

A reputable private transfer service will have baby seats and booster seats available on request — this is included in the service, not a €30 add-on.

Journey time: reality vs theory

The RER theoretically takes about 45 minutes (direct). In practice, with the connection change at Châtelet, waiting times, and walking with luggage and kids, you're looking at 1h30–2h from terminal to hotel.

A private van takes 40–50 minutes door-to-door, with no waiting for connections.

The verdict

Choose the RER if: you're a couple with a single backpack, travelling light, and the price difference is significant for you.

Choose a private van if: you have children under 10, you have a stroller, you have more than 2 pieces of luggage, or you simply want to start your holiday without stress.

Disneyland Paris is a magical experience. Don't spend the first two hours of it managing stairs, barriers and crowded carriages.
